Five out of five STORGY typewriters – Longer Review – Most people have seen the movie, but Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book is a very special story with much more in it than the film, as well as being a magically told tale. Gr 7 10-This fictional memoir of Egypt's alluring, mysterious queen resonates with historical authenticity, plausible emotional dilemmas, and passion for power and survival. Narrating with the poise and confidence of a born leader, this Cleopatra should win readers over. The arrival of Marcus Antonius midway through the novel (and later of Julius Caesar) provides only the briefest hint of romance-Meyer (The Bad Queen) roots her heroine squarely in the realm of politics. This is sibling rivalry at its most vicious: crossing her sisters could cost Cleopatra her life, let alone her throne. During this time, readers are treated to royal intrigue and the cutthroat politics of Cleopatra's two older sisters, Tryphaena and Berenike, who are desperate to prevent Cleopatra's rule, since she is the favorite daughter of their father, King Ptolemy XII. Meyer's short chapters can occasionally make the narrative feel choppy, but her lush, detail-rich prose ably evokes Cleopatra's life as a young princess, beginning at age 10 and continuing on until she turns 22. Before she was a queen, Cleopatra was a girl, and Meyer's incarnation of the future monarch longs to be treated as normal-wandering the marketplace, learning to dance-even as she secretly hopes to someday rule Egypt. The plot is tightly woven, and Buehlman does a great job of keeping the stakes high and the tension palpable throughout. The story moves at a brisk pace, with plenty of action, suspense, and surprises to keep you engaged from beginning to end. His companions, a band of misfits and outcasts, are also well-drawn and interesting, each with their own unique motivations and backstories.Īnother thing I appreciated about this book is its pacing. He’s not your typical swashbuckling hero, but rather a scrappy and resourceful thief who relies on his wit and cunning to survive. Kinch, the protagonist, is a fascinating and flawed hero who is easy to root for. Speaking of characters, the cast in this book is diverse and memorable. Buehlman’s writing is both evocative and immersive, and he does a great job of bringing his world to life with vivid descriptions and well-drawn characters. The story takes place in a gritty, realistic fantasy world that is full of danger, magic, and political intrigue. One of the things I loved about this book is the rich and complex world that Buehlman has created. But as Kinch and his companions journey deeper into the mage’s territory, they discover dark secrets and treacherous enemies that threaten their mission and their very lives. The story follows Kinch Na Shannack, a thief and a clever talker, as he sets out on a perilous mission to steal a legendary sword from a powerful mage. The Blacktongue Thief is a fantastic debut novel by Christopher Buehlman. |
